What is Nose Surgery (Rhinoplasty)?

Nose Surgery, or rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the appearance of the nose.  It can also improve nasal function by modifying the nasal passages.  It is usually performed because the patient feels that their nose does not fit in with the proportions of other facial structures, or because the nasal passages are suffering from a deviation.

Often referred to as a “nose job,” rhinoplasty involves making incisions inside of the nose, and in some cases, making incisions along the crease of the nose.  By doing so, the plastic surgeon will create an aesthetically pleasing, harmonious, and functional nose.  The surgeon separates the soft tissues and nasal skin from the underlying cartilage and bone, then reshapes the underlying framework to give the nose a more balanced appearance.  A stent is usually inside as well as overlying the nasal bridge to allow the newly sculpted nose to maintain its shape and heal properly.

You might be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:

A rhinoplasty can accomplish some of the following desired effects.

Rhinoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis.  The patient will be permitted to go home after a few hours of recovery.  The nose may be tender for a few days following the surgery.  Bruising and swelling are common, but should subside after one to two weeks depending on the extent of surgical correction.  Make sure to follow up with your surgeon to ensure that the nose is healing properly.
