Comparing Nipple Reconstruction Options: Flaps vs. Tattooing
Many patients consider nipple reconstruction a vital part of their breast reconstruction process. This step can help to restore the appearance of the breasts and restore their comfort with their appearance.
Nipple reconstruction surgery can be performed in two ways: the skin flap technique and nipple tattooing. At East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery, we want to provide you with the benefits of each option so you can make an informed decision about your nipple reconstruction.
Skin Flap Technique
The skin flap method is a preferred choice for nipple reconstruction after mastectomy. It’s typically done after the breasts have healed from reconstruction surgery, allowing for optimal nipple placement and results.
In this procedure, a skin flap from the new breast or another body part is used to form the new nipple, ensuring a natural look. Post-healing, tattooing for the areola and nipple can enhance the appearance.
A main benefit of the flap procedure is that the nipples have projection which provides more natural-looking results. However, the new nipples will not feel the same and will likely have no sensation. The tissue used for the procedure will also be affected by aging and other factors which can cause them to lose their projection.
This may feel overwhelming as it’s another surgery, but other patients believe that it is the final step of their breast reconstruction journey.
Nipple Areola Tattooing
3D Nipple Areola Tattooing provides a way to create the appearance of a natural nipple without having to undergo additional surgery. These are real tattoos made by inserting pigment into the skin using a needle. A skilled and experienced tattoo artist can create a nipple that looks incredibly realistic.
While this option doesn’t create a physical nipple, many find the visual results satisfactory, appreciating the avoidance of further surgery and recovery time.
We work with tattoo artist Vinnie Myers who specializes in 3D nipple and areola tattooing. Using a combination of skill and various techniques, he can provide stunning results that are personalized based on the aesthetic needs of each patient.
