What is Botox® Cosmetic?
Botox® Cosmetic is one of the most popular cosmetic procedure performed today and is considered a safe, effective way of treating aging skin. Originally developed to treat patients with certain muscular disorders, it is now most commonly used to treat the visual signs of aging by reducing or removing wrinkles. Proven to be the best non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation, injections include horizontal forehead furrows, vertical lines between the eyebrows and the “crow’s feet” around the eyes.
It’s worth pointing out that Botox® Cosmetic is not in the same class of treatments as dermal fillers or many other wrinkle treatments. While dermal fillers reduce the signs of aging by filling volume in the face created by lax skin, Botox Cosmetic® targets the wrinkles directly by paralyzing those muscles whose contractions create the wrinkles in the first place. The wrinkles disappear because the muscles are no longer contracting, meaning that the end result looks both incredibly natural and youthful.
Am I a good candidate for Botox® Treatments?

Botox® Cosmetic works to relax the contraction of muscles by blocking nerve impulses and altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles. Fewer muscle contractions means your wrinkles will relax, soften, and smooth out. The effects from this treatment will last for several months after which patients may choose to repeat the procedure.
Special Considerations for Botox® Cosmetic Treatments:
Because Botox® Cosmetic is a reformulation of the botulinum toxin, it’s important to identify any allergies early in the process. It’s also worth noting that Botox Cosmetic® can cause some lingering redness, so it’s vital to be prepared for that. Otherwise, Botox® Cosmetic is generally safe for a wide range of ages and weights. However, it is important that you inform your surgeon if you are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant, as Botox Cosmetic by design lingers in the system for several months.
Procedure and Recovery
Generally you will be able to resume normal activities immediately after your Botox® Cosmetic procedure, however, following these post-procedure guidelines will greatly reduce the recovery period:
- Avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours
- Avoid heavy physical exercise
- Do not use cosmetics on the treated area
Botox® injections are often referred to as a “lunch hour” procedure because of the generally short amount of time the process takes.
