A breast lift or a mastopexy is usually warranted after excessive weight loss or after pregnancy when breasts may appear sagging or drooping. We typically see breast lifts with patients who are satisfied with the size of their breast but would prefer their breasts to have a more youthful appearance. However, the procedure can be coupled with breast enlargement as well for a complete restructuring of the breast.
The typical breast lift involves an incision from areola to the base of the breast as well as underneath the breast. Excess skin and fat is removed from the breasts and the skin is […]
Anytime someone has breast implants done, invariably we are asked how do I know if my implants are leaking? First off, it’s very rare for implants to leak so any symptoms you feel are probably not due to leaking implants. Second, it depends on whether you have saline implants or silicone implants. If a saline implant leaks, you will notice a breast asymmetry within a couple of days. Silicone leaks are harder to detect. If you notice symptoms and think your implants are leaking, visit a board certified plastic surgeon for a diagnosis.
If your breast are leaking, a number of clinical studies have shown that the […]
When people think of the word plastic, they typically think of packaging, or bags, or other foreign or fake objects. However, the etymology of the word plastic doesn’t have anything to do with materials, but rather has its roots in the Greek work “plastike”. The word “plastike” defines the action of modeling or sculpting, a fitting word indeed for the surgeon who’s expertise lies in the reshaping of those features of the human body which nature has given but the patient wishes to alter, or make whole again the body whose parts have been injured or taken away by unfortunate […]
The DIEP Flap breast reconstruction procedure is a highly sophisticated procedure that requires more recovery than other forms of breast reconstruction. Following the procedure, the patient should expect to remain in the hospital for approximately three to five days. After 24-48 hours, the patient should begin to walk around their room and hospital floor on a limited basis to exercise the lungs, increase blood flow, and speed-up the healing process. By 72 hours after the surgery, most patients are walking, sitting upright, and taking only pain pills by mouth. By the fifth day, patients have been released from the hospital […]
Rather than using silicone or a temporary filler, a plastic surgeon can use your own fat for permanent lip augmentation. The procedure is similar to body contouring (link), where fat is removed from different places on your body like the belly, back and thighs. Once the fat is removed, it’s refined and then injected into your lips in various places to create the lips you want. The fat can also be injected into facial wrinkles and other place on your face to rejuvenate the skin and produce a more youthful and natural appearance.

A “butt lift” is a procedure under body contouring. To get wider hips or a rounder butt, a plastic surgeon will use liposuction to remove fat from one part of your body, refine it and then re-inject it into another part of the body by way of fat grafting. By removing fat and adding fat to different places on the body, the plastic surgeon can get a desired effect like wider hips or rounder butt.

We have seen a very low number of FDA approved silicone implants leak. Most silicone implants will end up lasting a lifetime. However, there have been many large studies (link) that have proven silicone implants are just as safe as saline. In fact, the amount of leakage is less from a silicone implant (link) than a saline implant meaning the silicone implant will keep its shape longer. This is why today most breast augmentations and reconstructions are done with silicone implants.

While there is no way to make a scar disappear completely, there are many methods available to plastic surgeons to make the scar less noticeable. The methods that a plastic surgeon would use depend on where the scar is located.
If you are considering getting plastic surgery to decrease how noticeable your scar is, you should first consult with a plastic surgeon so they can not only asses the scar for a range of treatments but explain each procedure and how it will make a scar less prominent.

Once a patient has a mastectomy and has fully healed from the procedure, they can choose to have breast reconstruction surgery. This is not considered a cosmetic procedure and all forms of health care insurance must provide coverage for breast reconstruction surgery for patients who have been treated for breast cancer.
