What is Implant Based Breast Reconstruction?

Implant-based breast reconstruction rebuilds the breast using silicone or saline implants after a mastectomy. The process typically involves either a one-stage direct-to-implant reconstruction or a two-stage tissue expander method.

In the two-stage approach, a temporary expander will be placed above your chest muscle and filled with saline over several weeks to stretch your skin. Once your desired size is reached, the expander is replaced with a permanent implant. In some cases, an acellular dermal matrix (ADM) may be used to provide additional support and a more natural shape.

What Are the Benefits of Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction?

Implant-based breast reconstruction is less invasive than tissue-based (flap) reconstruction, as it does not require the use of donor tissue from other areas of the body.

It also offers a smooth, symmetrical breast shape, and since the implants come in several sizes and shapes, our clients can customize based on their preferences and body proportions.
Implant-based breast reconstruction can help those who do not have sufficient donor tissue or prefer to avoid multiple surgical sites.

While implants may require future maintenance or replacement, advances in implant technology continue to improve their longevity and natural appearance.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction?

The best candidates are individuals in New Jersey and New York City who have sufficient skin and tissue remaining after a mastectomy to accommodate an implant.

Candidates are generally women who have undergone a skin-sparing or nipple-sparing mastectomy; those who do not have enough excess donor tissue for flap reconstruction or prefer to avoid additional surgical sites may also be well-suited for implant-based reconstruction.
Additionally, women who are not undergoing radiation therapy, or whose skin has healed well post-radiation, may be better candidates, as radiation can impact skin elasticity and healing.

What’s the first step?

The first step for breast reconstruction surgery is scheduling a consultation with one of our surgeons at East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery in either New Jersey or New York. Together, you will discuss your medical history, goals, and the various reconstruction options available to you. Your surgeon will then help you determine which procedure is best for you.

We’re here to provide you with all the information you need to make confident, informed decisions about your care. Book your consultation today, and let us guide you through every step of the process!

What to Expect on the Day of Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction

During implant-based breast reconstruction, the procedure begins with general anesthesia. Next, your ECAPS surgeon will make incisions along the natural folds of the breast. The implant will then be inserted into the breast pocket created. Your surgeon may use a tissue expander at this time to help stretch your skin to create space for the implant.

Once your implant is perfectly in place, the incisions will be closed.

Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction Recovery

After surgery, you’ll experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising around the breast area, which is normal. You’ll be given pain medication to help manage any discomfort.
You must avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity in the first few days following surgery. Drain tubes may be placed to help reduce swelling, and your surgeon will provide guidance on how to care for them. As your body heals, you’ll wear a compression garment to support the chest and reduce swelling.

Full recovery, including the ability to return to work and more strenuous activities, usually takes about six to eight weeks.

How Much Does Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction Cost in New Jersey?

Under the Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), health insurance plans that cover mastectomy are federally required to also cover breast reconstruction. This includes patients with a history of breast cancer as well as those undergoing preventive mastectomy due to high-risk genetic mutations like BRCA.
