Haripriya Ayyala, MD

Dr. Haripriya Ayyala is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon and fellowship-trained microsurgeon specializing in advanced breast reconstruction. She is one of the few female plastic surgeons practicing microsurgery in New Jersey. Her practice offers the full spectrum of breast reconstruction, including DIEP flap and other autologous (natural tissue) reconstruction, implant-based reconstruction, oncoplastic breast surgery, breast resensation, and lymphatic reconstruction. Dr. Ayyala brings highly subspecialized surgical training and a deeply compassionate perspective to complex reconstructive recovery.

Why Patients Choose Dr. Ayyala

Autologous DIEP Flap & Complex Reconstruction: Specializes in flap-based reconstruction using the patient’s own natural tissue without sacrificing abdominal muscle

Sensation-Preserving Breast Reconstruction (Nerve Resensation): Incorporates nerve preservation and nerve reconstruction techniques in both autologous and implant-based reconstructions, restoring not just breast shape but sensation after mastectomy

Supermicrosurgery & Immediate Lymphatic Reconstruction: One of the few surgeons in the region offering immediate lymphatic reconstruction at the time of axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) to help prevent lymphedema before it starts, as well as lymphovenous bypass (LVB) and vascularized lymph node transplant (VLNT) procedures to treat existing lymphedema

Comprehensive Breast Cancer Recovery: Her work reflects a comprehensive approach to breast cancer reconstruction — one that considers not only how to rebuild the breast, but also how reconstruction integrates into cancer treatment, recovery, and long-term quality of life.

Training & Academic Leadership

Dr. Ayyala graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed her integrated plastic surgery residency at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. She then completed advanced fellowship training in reconstructive microsurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

She subsequently joined the faculty at Yale School of Medicine as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, where she established a comprehensive breast reconstruction and lymphatic surgery program while co-directing multidisciplinary breast cancer recovery initiatives.

Research & Innovation

An active surgeon-scientist, Dr. Ayyala has served as an institutional principal investigator for NIH-funded trials in breast reconstruction. She has led clinical studies focused on advancing surgical planning, optimizing pain control, and exploring early applications of robotic microsurgery. She has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed scientific publications and is an invited lecturer nationally and internationally on advanced reconstructive techniques.

Patient-Centered Philosophy

Above all, Dr. Ayyala puts patient care first. Her breadth of expertise allows her to tailor a personalized reconstruction plan around each patient’s unique oncology treatment, anatomy, lifestyle, and personal goals, prioritizing both immediate surgical excellence and lifelong quality of life.
