Dermabrasion

Conveniently Located to Serve Hoboken, Ridgewood, Livingston, Pompton Plains, and Manhattan/NYC

Your skin is a shield, protecting you from the harshness of the environment. Whether that means absorbing UV rays from the sun, blocking a blast of arctic air, or perspiring in the heat, your skin ends up taking a lot damage. Sometimes this means that your skin can age—aesthetically, anyway—faster than the rest of your body, leaving you looking a bit older than you actually feel. Dermabrasion offers a way to reward your skin for all the hard work it does protecting you from the elements.

What is Dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a procedure intended to make your skin look more youthful and radiant. The procedure can accomplish this goal in several ways. First, dermabrasion can reduce the appearance of fine and deep wrinkles or smooth out fine facial wrinkles, such as those around the mouth. The procedure can also address uneven skin surfaces that result from scarring by accidents or previous surgery. Dermabrasion accomplishes this by essentially “refinishing” the surface of your skin in the same way you might refinish hardwood floors—by carefully scraping away the top layer of damaged skin to expose the healing powers of the more youthful layer of skin beneath.

Dermabrasion has also been found to be useful in the removal of pre-cancerous growths called keratoses.

Dermabrasion is a procedure in which the surface of the epidermis of the skin is removed to reveal a new layer of skin to reveal a smoother and refreshed facial appearance. The procedure can be preformed on small sections of skin or the entire face or in concurrence with other procedures. Discomfort experienced will depend on the area of tissue being treated, and will be part of your discussion with the plastic surgeons at East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery.

Am I a good candidate for Dermabrasion?

One or more of the following may indicate you are a good candidate for Dermabrasion:

  • Skin is sun-damaged
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Inactive acne scars
  • Scars from surgeries or injuries that have healed
  • Wrinkles and fine facial lines

Special Considerations for Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a generally safe procedure for most ages and weights. However, if you have particularly sensitive skin, the procedure may cause additional discomfort. Additionally, because of the abrasive nature of the procedure, you may experience redness in your skin immediately following your dermabrasion treatment. The redness will subside, but you may wish to plan accordingly.

Procedure and Recovery

The typical recovery time for a dermabrasion procedure is usually around two weeks. Local New Jersey dermabrasion patients should be able to return to normal activity such as work around the same time but hold off on demanding activities for an additional two to four weeks. Patients should also use sunscreen when in the sun for at least six months following this procedure in order to best preserve the results.
