Gynecomastia

Introduction to Gynecomastia Surgery

Male breast reduction surgery, also called gynecomastia, is the surgical correction of overdeveloped or enlarged breasts in men. Gynecomastia is the medical term for the disorder. True gynecomastia is not related to obesity and cannot be corrected by diet or exercise. To learn more about surgically resolving gynecomastia-related issues, schedule a consultation at one of our East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery offices in New Jersey or New York. A man with short, dark hair and a gray beard is leaning against a metal railing, seen from the mid-chest up. He wears a light beige, long-sleeved top and has a contemplative expression, gazing upward and slightly to his right. His hands are clasped together, and a dark brown watch is visible on his left wrist. The background features a modern, muted blue-gray wall or building facade with soft shadows. A portion of the metal railing is visible, and the lighting is soft, enhancing the overall atmosphere. - Gynecomastia in New York and New Jersey

What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Male breast surgery involves reducing breast size through the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin. This is done through liposuction and possibly surgical incisions designed to flatten and enhance more masculine chest contours. Your body shape, breast tissue, and goals will determine the best type of surgery for you, which will be discussed with the surgeons at East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Gynecomastia Surgery?

One or more of the following may indicate you are a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery in the New Jersey and New York areas:

  • You are in good physical condition and have a relatively normal weight
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too large

Special Considerations for Gynecomastia:

Age: Gynecomastia can be performed at any age, but for the best outcome, it is recommended that you wait until breast development has stabilized.

  • Weight Loss: If you plan to lose a significant amount of weight, please inform the ECAPS doctors during your consultation. They recommend that you achieve your weight-loss goals before surgery.
  • Medication: Many medications can cause enlarged breasts, including antibiotics, steroids, alcohol, amphetamines, marijuana, antidepressants, heroin, and medications for AIDS, anxiety, cancer, ulcers, and heart problems. If you use any of these, you should speak to your doctor about stopping their use or switching medications.
  • Medical issues: It is important to rule out other causes before undergoing this surgical procedure. If hormone imbalances, tumors, or other medical issues have caused abnormal breast development, surgery will only be temporary, as the condition may recur.

What’s the first step?

The first step in any treatment of gynecomastia symptoms is to schedule a consultation with one of our expert surgeons at ECAPS. The surgeons at East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery will conduct an examination and discuss with you your expected outcome, determining how your desires can best be achieved, as they do with all of our New Jersey male breast reduction surgery patients.

You must come prepared to discuss your full medical history, including any medical conditions, previous surgeries or treatments, drug allergies, current medications, and use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances.

What to Expect on the Day of Gynecomastia Surgery

On the day of your gynecomastia surgery in the New Jersey and New York areas, your surgeon and their team will welcome you to ECAPS, get you settled in the procedure room, and review your surgical plan for any last-minute questions. Gynecomastia is commonly an outpatient surgery performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. You will be permitted to go home after a few hours or possibly a full day of recovery.

Once your anesthesia kicks in, your surgeon will begin. The size of the incision will depend on the goals of the surgery. For fat removal only, a smaller incision may be sufficient; however, if excess skin needs to be eliminated as well, larger incisions may be required. Further, depending on the location of the nipple and any adjustments made to it, a nipple graft might also be performed. Additionally, depending on the nipple location, a nipple graft may also be required. Once your surgeon is satisfied with the final shape and balance of your male chest, they will close the incisions with sutures. Your chest will then be wrapped in gauze dressings or a surgical support garment (to minimize swelling), and you may have drain tubes to prevent the accumulation of fluid.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery

Your ECAPS plastic surgeon will provide detailed information about normal symptoms, signs of complications, and instructions for recovery after the surgery.

You should be able to walk immediately following surgery and be up and about within a day or two. The surgical area will be sore and tender to the touch for the first few days. You must refrain from lifting, bending, pulling, or pushing anything, as well as engaging in any strenuous activity, for at least two weeks.

Drain tubes will be removed after two days, and dressings will be removed within several days. If non-absorbable stitches are used, they are removed within two weeks. Swelling and discoloration will occur but will improve within a few weeks. You should be able to resume your normal activities after several weeks.

East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery surgeons will recommend follow-up visits to evaluate your healing process. It is essential to follow your doctor’s instructions for the best possible outcome. Achieving that outcome is our shared goal, and with the help of East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery, you can finally get your desired, masculine profile.
