Laser Hair Removal

Introduction to Laser Hair Removal

Smooth skin is in. For better or for worse, we live in a society today that emphasizes the beauty of hairless skin. Unfortunately, achieving smooth skin can be challenging. Whether you have been shaving or waxing, smooth skin comes with a price: pain, irritation, and time. However, laser hair removal promises to change that. As performed by our team in New Jersey, laser hair removal is a relatively quick and effective way to eliminate hair permanently; this means you can enjoy smooth skin without the need for shaving or waxing. Like many other laser procedures, laser hair removal utilizes the power of directed energy to achieve results.

The laser light is “absorbed” by the hair, causing just enough damage to the hair follicle to prevent it from growing. Your results will depend on several factors, including your hair color. Our patients consistently achieve excellent results, resulting in smooth skin that lasts for months or even years to come.

Contact East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery to schedule a confidential consultation if you’re ready to put your razor and wax paper away. We’ll discuss the best way to achieve your desired results and what you can expect from laser hair removal in the New York and New Jersey areas.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses laser light to remove unwanted hair from any part of the body. The laser is attracted to melanin, or pigment, in the hair more so than in the skin, so unwanted hairs are selectively targeted. Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, resulting in approximately 90% of patients with permanent hair loss after three to five laser treatments.

During the procedure, a highly amplified laser beam is passed over the area where the patient wants the hair permanently removed. The laser passes through the skin to reach individual hair follicles, which are then damaged by the intense heat of the laser, thereby inhibiting future hair growth. A jet of cool air is passed over the area simultaneously to make the procedure more comfortable.

Some of the popular target areas of the body to be treated include:

  • Armpits
  • Back
  • Bikini area
  • Chest
  • Facial areas such as the upper lip and chin
  • Legs

Laser Hair Removal With Elite MPX

At East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery, we’re pleased to offer patients Laser Hair Removal options for a wide range of body areas, including the upper lip, the underarms, and the legs.
Using Elite MPX, effective and efficient laser hair removal treatments can be completed in as little as a few minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated. Even larger areas, such as the back or legs, can be treated in as little as an hour.

Patients are then able to return to normal daily activities. Some patients may experience slight redness or discomfort, which can sometimes feel similar to a sunburn, for a few days after the treatment. Because hair grows in “shifts” on your body, it may take between 3 and 7 treatments to get your desired results. Once the sessions are complete, most patients experience permanently smooth skin.

What Are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?

Patients who have undergone laser hair removal in the New York and New Jersey areas have shared the numerous benefits of the treatment. Some of the primary benefits of the Apogee® Elite Laser include:

  • Given the Apogee® Elite wavelength’s high absorption by melanin, the Apogee® provides highly effective results, generating as much as 80% permanent hair reduction.
  • The various selectable wavelengths and long-pulse durations enable the safe, gentle, and effective removal of hair.
  • High fluence from large spot sizes results in faster treatment sessions.
  • The double cooling technique of the Apogee Elite system enables a more comfortable experience.
  • Hair removal techniques such as shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams may work temporarily but leave the hair follicle intact. This means that the hair will regrow within one to four weeks. The Apogee Elite Laser offers long-term reduction, and with more frequent treatments, can eventually lead to the removal of unwanted hair.

Other techniques, such as plucking, waxing, or sugaring, can irritate the skin and stimulate hair follicles, potentially leading to increased hair growth. This occurs because the body reacts and produces thicker, stronger hairs the next time. The Apogee® Elite Laser attacks the hair follicle without irritating it; unwanted hairs are weakened and minimized, especially after multiple treatment sessions.

Who Are the Best Candidates For Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure, making it a good fit for many candidates. However, it is worth noting that it has a reputation for working best on patients with lighter skin and darker hair, due to the contrast between the pigment in the hair and the skin. Modern laser hair removal devices and techniques have improved outcomes for a wide variety of patients, extending beyond the narrow band of pigmentation.

Individual results may vary, but to learn more about your eligibility, please contact us to schedule a consultation. The best way to determine if laser hair removal is a good fit for you is to discuss it with our surgeons.

Laser hair removal is an exceptionally popular procedure, so we see many interested candidates from New York, New Jersey, and nationwide. We have found that candidates for laser hair removal tend to have at least some of the following criteria in common:

  • A desire to eliminate hair on some surface of the body
  • A desire for smooth skin
  • You have realistic expectations about what this procedure can accomplish
  • Your skin is healthy enough for this procedure

What’s the first step?

The first step in getting laser hair removal in the New York and New Jersey areas is to schedule an in-person visit with one of our providers at ECAPS. During the consultation, your provider will ask you about your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations for the procedure. Please be upfront about any medical information, as certain antibiotics or photosensitizing medications may interact with laser treatment. They will then ask you to identify your target areas, examine them, and assess the condition of your skin, recommending the techniques they will use to meet your goals. They will also outline the treatment process and its associated risks and benefits.

If you both decide to proceed with the treatment at the end of the consultation, your provider will design a treatment plan. Patients can share this plan with the patient concierge for scheduling and pricing information.

If you both agree to proceed with dermal fillers as your chosen treatment, they will create a customized treatment plan, which you can then submit to our patient concierge for scheduling, pricing, and any necessary pre-treatment instructions.

What to Expect on the Day of Laser Hair Removal?

On the day of your laser hair removal in the New York and New Jersey areas, your provider and staff will greet you and assist you in settling into the state-of-the-art procedure room. A staff member will review your treatment plan to ensure your comfort. Once you are ready to proceed, a cold gel or cooling device may be applied to protect your skin, and you will be provided with protective eyewear.

Your provider will then use a light device to shoot pulses of light to the target area. Laser hair removal can cause a prickling sensation on the skin, but this discomfort typically subsides with subsequent treatments. Once the procedure is complete, you will be given a cooling ointment or ice packs to help alleviate any redness and pain.

The length of the procedure varies depending on the size of the target area. It can range from a few minutes to an hour or longer.

The combination of the 755nm wavelength laser with the 1064nm wavelength laser, which comprises the Apogee Elite Laser, provides a non-invasive light therapy system that can effectively eliminate unwanted hair from all parts of the body. Each wavelength is suited to a specific combination of hair and skin types, maximizing the versatility of treatment.

The 755nm wavelength Apogee Elite laser features selectable parameters and long-pulse durations, enabling you to remove hair more safely, gently, and effectively. This laser can be used at higher energy settings for skin rejuvenation, such as treatment for sun spots and freckles. These darker areas of the skin have more melanin, causing the laser to be preferentially attracted to them. The laser can destroy this unwanted melanin, returning the skin to its normal color.

The 1064nm wavelength Nd: YAG laser also aids in hair removal and is more commonly used for olive to darker skin types. It can also stimulate new collagen production by deep dermal heating of the skin, resulting in improvements in skin texture and elasticity.

The multiplex mode, or MPX, of the Apogee® Elite Laser refers to the combination of both wavelengths. This dual-use feature maximizes the laser’s effectiveness in targeting unwanted hair, especially on the face, armpits, and bikini lines. The depth of penetration and relative safety of the 1064nm wavelength on darker skin types, along with the higher attraction to melanin of the 755nm wavelength, occur in sequential pulses during treatment, which helps remove even the most resistant hair.

Laser Hair Removal Recovery

While laser hair removal can be a straightforward process with minimal recovery time, proper skin care is crucial for achieving the desired results. Immediately after a treatment session with the Apogee® Elite Laser, you can expect the skin to be slightly red and swollen. The treated area may feel a little puffy and irritated, similar to a mild sunburn. This sensation typically disappears within a few hours for most people, but the duration may depend on the size of the treated area, so the irritated skin may take up to a day or two to return to normal.

There are two ways to alleviate any discomfort during the recovery process. Cold compresses help soothe the affected area, while various moisturizing creams can also aid in skin recovery. Antibacterial creams are generally discouraged because they can cause the skin to dry out. Using a daily moisturizer will ensure that your skin returns to a healthy and supple state, leading to optimal results from your treatment.

In the first few days after treatment, the affected area should be kept out of direct sunlight. Even a small amount of sun exposure can irritate and burn the treated areas of the skin. The sun can also impact the effectiveness of any follow-up treatments. If the sun is unavoidable, be sure to use a generous amount of sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Shaving is also discouraged for the following four days, allowing the skin time to heal. Waxing, tweezing, bleaching, and plucking are not recommended during laser hair removal treatments.

Unwanted hair will begin to fall out after a few days, and this is a normal part of the treatment and recovery process. This is often misunderstood as hair regrowth. Typically, one treatment session will slow hair growth, but it does not guarantee permanent hair removal. Typically, multiple laser hair removal treatments are required to achieve a prolonged hair-free period.

How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost in New Jersey?

The cost of Laser Hair Removal in the New York and New Jersey areas depends on multiple factors, including the size of the target area, the number of sessions needed, and the provider’s fees. Patients are encouraged to schedule a consultation at ECAPS so that their treatment plan can be developed and an estimated final cost can be determined.
