Introduction to Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery can help women feel more comfortable in their bodies, aesthetically and physically. Most commonly, women undergo breast reduction surgery to decrease the size of large or overdeveloped breasts to ease physical discomfort caused by the weight of the breasts. To learn more about this procedure, we invite you to schedule a one-on-one consultation with a skilled surgeon at one of our East Coast Advanced Plastic Surgery offices in New Jersey or New York. Our specialization in breast procedures and the ECAPS Center for Breast Reconstruction has made us the premier practice for breast procedures in the New Jersey and New York areas.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excess fat, skin, and tissue to reduce the size of the breasts. The goal of this procedure is to minimize the weight of the breasts and redefine the body proportions. This procedure is often recommended for individuals who experience physical discomfort due to large breasts, such as back pain, neck strain, and shoulder pain.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

While breast reduction in the New Jersey and New York areas can improve patients’ physical appearance and make daily activities easier, it also provides numerous health benefits, including:

  • Reduced back, neck, and shoulder pain caused by the weight of large breasts
  • Improved posture
  • Reduced skin irritation under the breast fold
  • Easier exercise and physical activity
  • Better clothing fit and improved self-confidence

Who Are the Best Candidates for Breast Reduction?

You may be a good candidate for breast reduction surgery in the New Jersey and New York areas if one or more of the following are true:

  • Your breasts are fully developed, and you are in good physical condition to withstand major surgery
  • You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts may be too large
  • Your physical activity is limited due to the size and weight of your breasts
  • Your breasts hang low and/or have enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin
  • One of your breasts is noticeably larger than the other
  • You have back, neck, or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
  • You have indentations in your shoulders from bra straps and/or skin irritation in the breast creases

What’s the first step?

Before deciding to undergo breast reduction surgery in New Jersey and New York, you’ll have a consultation with one of our expert surgeons at an ECAPS office.

During your one-on-one consultation with the surgeon, breast reduction candidates will go over these considerations to ensure that your surgery is a success: your full medical history, including any medical conditions, previous surgeries or treatments, drug allergies, current medications, and use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances.

Breast Reduction Procedure Considerations

The following factors are also important to consider before undergoing breast reduction surgery:

  • Age: Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age, but for the best possible outcome, it is suggested that you wait until breast development has stopped completely.
  • Pregnancy: It is essential to inform your cosmetic surgeon if you plan to have children in the future. Pregnancy can cause unpredictable breast changes and may affect the long-term results of your breast reduction. Also, certain breast reduction techniques have better results than others if you wish to breastfeed in the future.

Weight Loss: Your plastic surgeon will likely recommend that you achieve your weight loss goals before undergoing any breast surgeries. Weight loss can affect your final results.

What to Expect on the Day of a Breast Reduction Treatment

On the day of your breast reduction treatment, your surgeon and their team will receive you and get you settled at ECAPS. A member of the staff will review your surgical plan to ensure you are fully ready to proceed. Once you are ready, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer anesthesia.

There are several different techniques for breast reduction surgery. During your consultation, your surgeon will determine which methods will help you achieve your goals based on your body shape and breast tissue.

  • Liposuction: This technique is best for patients with smaller reductions or those with good skin elasticity. Small incisions are made to suction fat from the breast, resulting in less scarring.
  • Vertical or Lollipop Incision: This technique involves circular cuts around the areola with an incision extending downward vertically. It is preferred for moderate reductions.
  • Inverted T or Anchor Incision: This technique is most often used for larger reductions and cases with significant sagging. It includes a circular incision around the areola, a vertical line down, and a horizontal incision along the breast crease.

During the breast reduction procedure, excess tissue and fat are removed, and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped to achieve a more proportionate appearance. The nipple may also be repositioned to a higher, more youthful position.

Without complications, the average breast reduction procedure should take between two and three hours.

Following surgery, your breasts will be wrapped in gauze dressings, and you may be asked to wear a surgical bra. Drainage tubes may also be necessary to prevent fluid accumulation.

You should be able to walk immediately following surgery, and will be up and about for your normal activities within a day or two after surgery. Your breasts will be sore and tender to the touch at first, and it is imperative that you do not lift, bend, pull, or push anything or engage in any strenuous activity for at least two weeks after your reduction. Stitches are usually absorbable and disappear over a few weeks. Swelling and discoloration will occur, and you may experience a loss of sensation in the nipple area. This may take up to a year to return to normal
